Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Goals for 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic: Top Ten Bookish Goals For 2013.

It is the start of a beautiful new year.  And what do we love to do every January 1st, with our head full of dreams and our eyes set on a prize? That’s right – we make New Year resolutions! So, what will I be accomplishing this year? Going to the gym? Hell no. Eating healthier? Sure, when pizza legitimately becomes a vegetable. Become a better person? That boat done sailed and sank.

That’s right – I’m flawless, baby.

This week, I will share with you a handful of goals that I actually plan on completing this year, in no particular order.

  1. Read 100 books – I’m sweating this one, but I think I can knock it out with a little help from the elementary books I have saved
  2.             Read more classics – My “Read” list is sadly missing a great number of classics and books that everyone tended to read as teens.
  3. Put a cap on book buying – I know – easier said than done. But I have seriously run out of book space, and it takes me forever to read the pile that is growing in my room. I’ve been threatened with pain of death if I keep bringing books into this household. It hasn't stopped me, but I can still dream big.
  4.  Stop book hoarding - Read at least a book that has been on my TBR pile longer than six months every month.
  5. Expand my horizon – I seem to become the YA hermit here. "What is that? A book written for ADULTS? Burn it!!"
  6. Start clearing out my TBR pile - When I first joined Goodreads, I had no direction when it came to choosing books. I just added everything I saw or any cover that I liked. (okay, well, I still do this now). Two years and 127 GR friends later, I can say that I have a better idea of my own tastes.  And to be honest, I have to move in the summer, and I do not want to move another 10 boxes of books again. I barely have enough real friends as it is.
  7.  Stop starting books and losing them – Seriously, I need a beeper on all of my books.
  8. Use the local library more.  ‘Nuff said.
  9. Stop collecting Kindle Books – Yes, those .99 cent books looks appealing, but that does not justify buying a hundred of them.
  10. I had this goal in November, but for 2013, I wanted to start book blogging.  So one goal down, nine more to go.

What were your goals? Have you already thrown them out the window? These goals seem better than that whole “diet and exercise” routine that I keep hearing about year after year.

See you next Tuesday - Lyn

  1. Your goals are very similar to mine! I was the same when I first joined Goodreads and blogging - now I find myself to be much more discriminating in what I add. But I still buy and hoard waaay too many books.

    1. I have literally no more room for books. The next step is in the middle of the floor.
Do you lose your books as well before you are done?

  2. OMG, you started with Calvin & Hobbes. LOVE!

Bahaha, I like how you're combining your book challenge you think you'll struggle with and reading more classics. LOL.

Book buying and book hoarding I will not be able to stop. Wah wah. I know myself.

I think I do a pretty good job keeping adult books on my reading list, thanks to Orbit and TLC, but most of my non-review reads I get to are YA, just because that's what I'm into right now.

When I'm choosing between books, I look at certain people's ratings, and if you those people hate it, then EFF that book.

    1. I did weed out my books for ones I know I would not enjoy. I got rid of 10 books total.
      I need an intervention.

  3. I love the beeper for the books. That would be pretty handy. At last count I have somewhere between 17 and 18 bookcases, large ones, and I remember one year I moved, it took one day to move the usual stuff and three for the books. Some of my friends actually shudder when they think of that day. Imagine. Happy reading.

    1. I have to move over the summer, and I know that I am going to become disowned over my book stack.
Oh well - less friends, more reading time.

  4. I really need to read some classics too, I haven't read any (except for Lord of the Flies) and I really need to change that. The book hoarding one is great, I may steal that one! I need to read through my shelves as well. Great list, I hope you meet ALL the goals!

    1. Thank you!
I have Dorian Grey and Frankenstein for my TBR classics. I need a little meat for my potatoes.

GR should just rename the site to BHA - Books Hoarders Anonymous.

  5. Great goals!! I want to read at least two of my own books each month to get through the hundreds of unread books I have. I have read quite a few classics, but I would like to read more. I also am trying to keep on a slight book buying ban and only buy books I am dying for and plan to read right away. No more buying them to sit on my shelf or in my ereader unread and lonely. Well, maybe not lonely since they have plenty of company lol!!

    1. Agreed. I have quite a few books that I needed NOW, and they are collecting dust.

      I am disappoint.

  6. Oh geez, number 9. I follow the Free Kindle books blog and it is killing me. I can't help it, even if a book sounds only moderately okay my brain immediately goes to, "But it's free!", which is great until you end up with 70 mediocre books on your Kindle that you forget to delete.

    1. I had to unsub from Free Kindle Books. It will take another lifetime to just read all the books on my Kindle.

  7. Haha, i wish I could stop book hoarding! But I can't even bear the thought of getting rid of any of my books. I would love to read more classics as well! Great goals :)

    1. I am looking forward to the Classic Movement - there are some top notch books that I keep pushing off because Book Sparkle Cover just hit the shelves.

  8. I feel you on so many of these, Lyn! I need to stop buying books, esp. Kindle ones (although I am saving a bunch of those for when I go on holiday, so I don't have to bring books with me) and I too add books on Goodreads like there's no tomorrow and then I see them again and wonder why I added them in the first place!

Good luck with your goals :D

    1. Thanks! I believe my Kindle is about 2 years old, and the very first book I read is still untouched. FAIL.

  9. A lot of people have classics on their goal list ... I ALWAYS say I'm going to read more of them, but never do. I have a few on my shelf I'd like to reread and some I'd like to first read, so we'll see. Maybe if I don't make it a resolution, I'll read a few of them!

And YES to no book hoarding! I was just on the Chapters website putting books in a cart, but I reminded myself NOT to buy them until more of the books I own get read. That is a HUGE goal for me this year!

Good luck with all of these!

    1. I'm failing at the book hoarding. I just got a whole stack of digital ARCs and my friend graced me with a giftcard to the used bookstore so.....

  10. All of these! Especially reading more classics and adult books. I can second that!

    Good luck!

  11. I'm a total book hoarder, it's awful. But what's funny is I haven't visited a TTT post today that DIDN'T have that as a goal. Lol We're all a bunch of book buying addicts, but as long as its not just me, I'm cool. :)

    1. Thanks! I'll have to stop by and take a look!

The sad thing about Kindle books is that you can't see the freakish growing pile of books. When you start flipping through your library, you then realize you have a slight obsession with all of those freebies.

  13. 4 and 6 are on my list as well. I wish there was a library here in the Philippines, soreading wouldnt have to be that pricey. *sigh* Anyway, good luck! :D

  14. They sound so sensible and …hard. I've given up on a cap on buying books, especially now I'm friends with someone who owns an independent bookshop (it’s just not possible, everytime I walk in she’s found something I’d like) but I am trying to tackle my TBR this year and I want to do a HUGE clear out of all those books that seemed a good idea but realistically are never gonna be read.

    1. Does she need a new friend!!?? That is awesome that you have a hookup for books.
I am doing a poor job of getting rid of books. I am going to end up on one of those intervention shows followed up by someone looking for me from "Hoarders".

  15. Congrats on #10!! Yay. I don't think I could ever stick to a book-buying ban, though. The spirit and the flesh are both unwilling.
